Looking good Sue, I’m thrilled for you, Ooh Ann, I am so afraid it’s all going to come to nothing. Always had nests that I couldn’t see and had to second guess everything. Now when I least expected it - it might Might ssshhhh Sue

Thanks Pete and Paul (sounds like two little dickie birds sitting on a wall . Don’t worry you are probably too young to remember that nursery rhyme ). Been a busy day in the box but she still keeps leaving a bare patch in the middle 🤷♀️. Just hoping things keep going Sue I'm older than I look! Actually I probably look as old as I am nowadays... all this worrying about nest boxes takes its toll I know that old rhyme very well.

Thanks Sue. I had my hopes dashed a little today. We have a robins nest just opposite the back door deep in the ivy. I see them disappearing there on a regular basis. Then this morning a newish cat to the neighbourhood was peering over the wall right above the nest We shooed the cat away and today we learn she belongs to our new neighbours. Described as very friendly. I mentioned the nest but the reply was that she was a bit of a hunter killer. I'm not sure if this makes for good nesting territory

Nest building started yesterday, exactly the same time as last year, but she is a faffer, moss in moss out shake it all about!! Despite lots of activity she is much further on, maybe its her first nest, will see what happens. Exactly the same here Karen! I don't know why but this happened last year and this, but not in years before (same bird maybe??). Anyway I've never had a nest actually start proper before first week in April so now is the time. Mine has been bringing stuff in and out for 2 weeks so far and still hasn't really started..

Hey Paul! Yes, but so far the same as last year - she is *still* bringing in and taking out on a daily basis!! Not too worried as exactly the same happened last year, in fact I think it was a full couple of weeks from first material until she actually went all in on building the nest. At least she is getting a bit of practice! This is all happening in a 3-hole concrete, with not too much happening in the other boxes. No sign of the robin (or wrens) so far, so if that box is going to be used it will have to be a second brood. I did have a moment of excitement in the starling box last week when sparrows were showing a real interest for a couple of days - this culminated with a fight inside the box between 2 males, neither of which have been back since..
Sorry not been on here much with new work commitments.. will post an update if/when she finally gets building properly!

Honestly any action in the boxes is enough to get me excited. I have never had a great tit nesting and I have noticed more interest this year. But I must not get too excited. The sparrows don't seem interested in the box they have fought over in the past.

Not as much action today - I think she must have been resting and feeding after all the effort of the past few days. Lots of motion alerts, but most of these have been caused by bits of feather and fluff blowing back and forth in the draughts.
I'm hoping she'll be gearing up to start laying some eggs soon!

It really is a strange year Paul. As you say, Malcom’s boxes are usually well under way by now. Visits are very sparse to both boxes BUT visits are still happening so Sue

Brilliant Karen, Mine is like that she will bring loads in the take half of it back out by the end of the day but they know exactly what time they need to get "serious" by the weather, trees etc so they are a better judge than us!
