Just a thought Pete re the Robins.
You say you noticed the chicks on the 8th April, could they have hatched on the 5th or 6th?
Robins normally fledge after 13 days and all go within half an hour. Like Blackbirds they fledge before they can fly and then skulk around thick undergrowth were they continue to be fed by the male whilst mum starts right away with her second or third nest. Many are predated in this state hence why they go for so many broods.
