I am coming of age tomorrow as I reach 60.
As all planned celebrations are on hold, I decided that we should sit outside this afternoon to enjoy the warm spring sun with a large glass of cold white wine. The silence on our 18 house development and the main rd 500 yards away is staggering and it seems to make the birdsong and calls so much sharper. No people, gardening or working noise and very little traffic.
Our female Robin exits the nest when hubby arrives and expects feeding. We were sat about 7 metres distant and about 2.0 metres below the nest site as the rear garden slopes from the hill towards the rear of our house.
At first we heard a lot of the single note alarm tweet of the female Robin noticing our presence but eventually she re entered the nest. This happened a few more times and with each she grew more confident on re entering her ivy enclosed watering can. Eventually a couple of hours later she did not seemed bothered at all!
We also noticed two brave Blue tits (whom we assumed were ours) coming to the feeder which is now as close to the house than ever before. Then all out war erupted as ours came from the front and chased them away!
The Dunnock's also seem to be engaged in a territorial skirmish with one or two others.
The final bit of action saw 3 Swallows in the field behind, high in the sky. There are horse stables about 1/4 mile away and I reckon they nested there last year. Three into two does not go this time of year so perhaps one of the young from last years fledging was being told to go away!
Tales from the Moors from an Oldie with nowt much else to do!
