Omg, let’s hope she’s just keeping herself busy until the time is right 
Seems a waste of energy to us but guess we don’t know what goes on in their tiny heads. Maybe, as you say, the moss is there to do a job of some sort and it needs changing when they feel it’s done that job cause it does seem to happen an awful lot.
