Hi all, been a while since I've been on - still planning next year's upgrades! Just a quicky, but we have an odd situation with a goldfinch fledgling that has turned up on our patio. I know that the advice is always just to leave fledglings, and probably also true in this case but I thought I'd seek the wisdom of the forum anyway. This young chap turned up about two hours ago, not walking brilliantly but I think it might just have been that s/he couldn't grip the patio very well. Anyway it has now gone to sleep, head tucked under wing and is standing about a foot from the door. It has literally been static for two hours with no sign of the parents at all (I didn't even know we had a local goldfinch nest, but we do get quite a few in the garden). Leave well alone? I'm keeping the dog inside for now, and although I doubt he'll kill it he will probably be curious (12 year old collie). Also this kind of assumes that this is a fledgling - seems very fluffy and unsteady - but perhaps not? Is colouring the same for young GFs? If not I suppose it could be a sick older bird. This was how he started - now with head under wing: This close to the door!
