Thanks everyone for the good luck wishes. There were still 4 chicks when I saw briefly this morning but one is very small. 
Sadly my PC decided that it had had enough this morning and I thought oh well I'll just view on my little tv and do without the monitoring. So I set it all up and had a picture for a minute but no sound. I tried another connecting route via a scart and still no joy...not even a picture.
I put it back just with the AV connectors and nothing. 
I think there is a lose connection within the cables and connectors which I caused to fail while I messed about ...so now I'll just have to hope I see them fledge!
