Sorry to read what you think happened to your female but most likely you are correct although I have read they can just drop dead through the energy they use during egg laying etc.I know what you mean about not getting attached but it is difficult when you become part of their lives. However, I am sure that we really should only be watching and learning and accept that this is nature at its hardest - tough though.
Will we do it all again next year? Damn right we will!!!!!
