Amanda, I believe he mates with her everyday each egg needs this, I am not 100% sure though, I think its that.
This normally happens before egg laying starts next day, However I did see our sparrows mating and took few days for her to lay the first egg.
So sometimes I don't know if its to make the bond stronger, I really wouldn't have a clue.
But getting visits, nest wriggles and sex scenes in the box can only be positive this late in the season can't it?
