Oh Sue they do get us in a spin don't they. If it's any help at all my pair quite often hang on the entrance and Boris is still having to coax May into the box or gently remind her that she is building a nest. When mine have started laying in the past the female leaves at dawn and may make a quick visit or two during the day before coming back to roost for the evening. Sounds like the fluttering is definitely a good sign that things are hotting up though  I could send you my inspection camera over and you could have a peek when they are out
