On the rooster side of things, if poo is being left it’s likely to be male. So I wonder if the female is indeed started building in next door (that you haven’t seen) and she’s roosting so he’s decided to roost close by? I only say this because last year my male was roosting in a box around 30 foot away from my female nesting box, He’s doing same again this year.
