Omg Matt, this is intriguing. Maybe the wrens nest got disturbed somehow and mum has managed to find your ready made new home for them. 
Just hope there can somehow be a good outcome for both the wrens and robin. 
Have you a spare box you can put near in the hope one of them will accept this . Really is a strange one. Good luck
