Oh Karen. It is horrible to see this and such a shame when they almost make it against the odds. My heart goes out to you. I have a couple of tiny ones that I will each feed to get the grub offered. When I've seen older chicks die in the past the parents always take the body out no matter what it takes 
Hope the rest go on to fledge. The weather here is awful today and it makes hunting down that food so much harder.
