Interesting about the Springwatch statistic. Just over a week ago up I was sent a photo by a friend in Scotland of a pavement covered in dead green caterpillars - washed off trees by the heavy rain. On the other hand, there have been a few articles doing the rounds recently about blue tits & great tits doing well overall due to garden feeders, with a possible link to the decline of other woodland species such as marsh tit, willow tit, pied flycatcher, wood warbler and lesser spotted woodpecker (e.g. THIS ARTICLE) Hard to tell if this is a genuine problem or just a theory.
