I think this was made and broadcast in 1974. It was made by Anglia TV and was one of the "Survival" wildlife series. It was called "Inside Story" but may have had a different broadcast title.
At that time I was 14 and had been building nestboxes for blue tits and sparrows for 4 years. I remember thinking it was the most magical thing I had ever seen on TV. After watching this, I tried sticking a "backless" nestbox to our families garage window with putty but got no takers!
