Weird you point that out Pete, Because my first camera box had a 17cm gap from base to hole and it didn't get a sniff of interest!
I remember being p*ssed off because I did pay alot for it, once I switched to another box we had success! I went years without a nest here and only had the 1 box back then.
12cm's from base to hole seems to work well for the blue tits here
