From what you've said i don't think that would of been cat related Ann, If two of the same bird are dead within feet of eachother sounds like it could of been a nasty fight between the birds and lead to death. A cat can't play with and kill two birds at once and I highly doubt the second bird would of been stupid enough to go near a cat who already as a bird playing with it. Sounds to me like two blue tits fighting which as lead to both their deaths, You see it all time in nest boxes they kill eachother when the fight is nasty enough. Thank god I have never witnessed this but I have seen it plenty of times online.
We have cats, Never had a problem with them killing birds or it doesn't affect nests we get in the garden, One my cats is 15 and she as killed 1 bird her whole life that was a dosy baby starling who landed pretty much in her lap. Its only really wild cats who aren't getting fed regular who will go hunting for birds, My cats only bother looking at a bird if it lands on the floor by it, They won't go searching for them. So if the cats in your area are well fed, Judging by the woman having 6 I am guessing she is a cat lover so they would be, I don't think they will bother hunting unless the bird is a very easy target. What you said on last page though doesn't sound like a cat killing to me in my opinion more likely two males fighting and leading to death.
