We stayed in Craster a small quiet place along the coast. You get the boat from Seahouses and I recommend going with 'Serenity' Catamaran boat crew there is a loo on board unlike some of the other companies where its bucket and chuck it! There are a few different types of trips and this was part of the 45min island tour where we met the seal colony. You see the Grace Darling lighthouse and St Cuthberts chapel. Do make an effort to go if you're up there it is well worth it plus they have a website so you can look at the weather and choose your day. Also I would definitely recommend taking some warm clothes with you even in mid summer it can get very chilly on the water!. 
P.S Puffins will have left by June after the breeding season but some birds like Cormorants stay a little longer. This pic was July.
