Thanks, it wasn’t the easiest to make. I have made the hole 32mm so maybe I can attract a pair of great tits that I keep seeing.....next year maybe Does the camera need to be to one side rather than the middle? I bought the Perspex which is for a feeder camera, so I may need to move it

Wow, looks fantastic Amanda. Definitely put a camera in it. Maybe a bit late for this year but you never know..

Amanda, The hole for camera to peak out is over one side on the side box (pretty much right next to the "ramp wall" but I'd leave it in the middle on yours. Might actually give you a better view being direct in the middle. When your camera arrives just test it, I personally think it will be fine.

I moved my camera in the side box more to the top, i think it will give more of a chance of seeing in the nest cup, watch my side box videos Amanda.

I put my sideview box up yesterday after struggling fitting the camera as I didn’t have s camera bracket. I couldn’t quite work out what I had done wrong, anyway I had put the camera upside down in my rush, so took it down to sort it. I went to screwfix and bought some stretcher plates, 10 for £1.49 and some 4m bolts and nuts from Wickes 20 for £2.99. This has made a fabulous adjustment bracket which has the capacity to move side to side and forwards and backwards, much better that the quick release camera mount. Here are a few photos.....

Haha, I like doing practical things, and most of it is being watched my my 6 year old daughter, so I hope she will be able to put her hand to most things. It is a challenge more than anything. I have got very sore fingers and no nails left but it has been fun. I am going to make another sideview box and replace the first box I made as I think that is a little too big inside. It costs roughly £10 for wood to make 2 sideview boxes, so well worth it. When I have got the measurements accurate I will post them

So how much you knocking these out to then to members? Yes that would be good some accurate measurements! Will help people out planning to make one.

Firstly, great job Amanda! Secondly, Paul - could I trouble you for one more measurement? Just the internal dimensions of the bottom of the base, as shown with the red outline on the image below - is that 11x11? Just double-checking really that those values are internal. I should be able to work the rest of what I need out, although the internal height of the upright wall on the right could be useful as well (is the 15cm internal, i.e. base of floor to bottom of ceiling?). I am going to tweak the design a bit to work with a raspberry pi camera with a standard lens. Will post something up when I have it figured out.

No Matt, That is the mistake I made, its 8x11, I have been private messaging Amanda, And totally remeasured the box for her. Its 11cm from back wall to front wall and 8cm from side wall to the ramp wall. I would wait for Amanda's full measurements I was you Matt, I will then delete all of mine (I think the base was the only wrong thing though) and Amanda will update all the new measurements, I don't know if she changed them abit to suit her. Probably best to get them off her with her making it, I am sure she will update the thread with measurements when she sees this.

Matt,
The base is what I struggle with. I am just building a 2nd box. I have just measured ‘this’ base at 9.5cm including the mitre (longest bit) I have been cutting the ramp wall first, (the other mitre can be used for either the base or the right hand wall) then I wood glue those 3 together using the base. The base has to be adjusted to fit. I just can’t get that just right.
I will take a phot of my scrap of paper with the measurements, but some of it will depend of the thickness of your wood
I hope that helps

Thank you for that Amanda, Just removed my pictures of the measurements so no confusion if anyone is looking in on this thread and wanting to make one. Do I have your permission to edit your first post on here and add this measurement picture in so its on the first page aswell?

Thank you Amanda. So base is 9.5 x 11 internal? And the wall on the right is 14.2, but where is this measured from? Is it the longest length of the piece of wood, or the internal/external height? thanks!

Yeah, most certainly, but put a disclaimer that they are only rough measurements, depending on the thickness of the wood used. Adjusting as building it is needed. Build the inner walls before the front, back and roof, as you are able to draw around that to make your front and back.
The bracket for the camera, posted about makes it so much easier to get a good camera angle....so much better that just the camera bracket or the quick release mount.

Thank you Amanda. So base is 9.5 x 11 internal? And the wall on the right is 14.2, but where is this measured from? Is it the longest length of the piece of wood, or the internal/external height? thanks! The house I am building today, the base was 9.5cm. So I measure a 9.5cm on the wood and then mitre it. The longest piece of the mitre with be the floor of the bird box, where the birds will nest Im off to pick my daughter up now, I would be on until after bedtime. Ask any questions and I will help you

Start with 15cm and then cut it down, mine ended up being 14.2 cm today The base section is a bit of a bugger, start with the ramp wall and fit each piece separately.

Thanks again Amanda. I am going to try and get my head around Sketchup and build a model in there based on your base and right wall measurements - I think the rest of the measurements should more or else fall out from these. The main reason I want to model it is that I can then set up a virtual camera within Sketchup and configure it with the field of view of the camera that I plan to use, and work out the best position for it etc without having to actually build the box. Will keep you posted.

3D modelling software: Sketchup
There is a free (online) version. It's a very popular package for 3D modelling with loads of tutorials etc available online. I did use it for a bit a few years ago but have forgotten most of it - it does take a bit of getting used to.
