Well I never Amanda. The goings on on this thread! I hope they are not just using your box as a secret getaway. If they have mated doesn't that mean she will lay tomorrow? Or was it just a bit of courtship behaviour? I hope it is the latter and she decides to start a nest in your box.

She wants to get down to Ikea and get some stuff for the 'home' instead of faffing about gazing all round!

Or was it just a bit of courtship behaviour? I hope it is the latter and she decides to start a nest in your box. That was my thoughts exactly! I thought they didn’t want to mess their own nest up! I have watched all the triggers from later visits, the last visit of the morning ended with the female from next doors box in mine (curly toe) so the other bird, I think female flew out No activity until about 4pm until a blue tit has visited twice for about 5 minute visits each time, but on their own Im keeping my fingers and toes crossed that the weather is brighter tomorrow, it has been awful today and I will see the beginnings of a nest I have been resigned to the fact I wasn’t getting a nest this year and had accepted that, then these new two turn up! By the way......does anyone know how long is it from mating to an egg?? Do they have to mate for each egg? I saw the neighbours blue tits mating more than once

I am watching this thread like a hawk Amanda with everything crossed for you! Would be great if you got a late nest after all the work you have put into your boxes.

Oh Sue you little legend! Amanda, I believe he mates with her everyday each egg needs this, I am not 100% sure though, I think its that. This normally happens before egg laying starts next day, However I did see our sparrows mating and took few days for her to lay the first egg. So sometimes I don't know if its to make the bond stronger, I really wouldn't have a clue. But getting visits, nest wriggles and sex scenes in the box can only be positive this late in the season can't it?

"Bonking box" Strange how no visits though The nest wriggles and visits even in the bad weather all looked so promising. She really does need to get a move on if she is going to nest, Its getting late in the season now even for "Late nesters" Got everything crossed for you Amanda

Well, well, well!!!! What have I been missing?? I have to say Amanda, it’s a few years ago now, but I’ve actually seen this ‘bonking behaviour’ in one of my boxes, and on my ‘washing line’!!! I was absolutely amazed how they managed to keep their balance without falling off! I’ve heard of being able to sleep on a ‘washing line’!, (that’s my hubby), but ‘bonking’, now that’s talent!!! Elle xx

Well that’s just taking a liberty - using your box for goodness knows what and then not building in it!! Not good enough. Sue

My daughter thinks they are fighting I think they haven’t been allowed to go anywhere the box today, next doors blue tit has been around a lot today

Hi all, I hope all your nest boxes are full of eggs or little babies My garden visitors are great tits at the minute, they are filling their boots with mealworm. I’m not seeing too much of the blue tits from next door in my garden, I do see them active around next doors box though. I guess the blue tit isn’t territorial now! I had a great tit in my box the other day and they often stick their heads in for a cheeky look. I am hoping that one of their fledglings will nest in my box next year! I hope you all have positive luck with your nests

It's good you still get some birds in your box Amanda. Still got fingers crossed for a late nest for you. Stranger things have happened.
