I think this was made and broadcast in 1974. It was made by Anglia TV and was one of the "Survival" wildlife series. It was called "Inside Story" but may have had a different broadcast title.
At that time I was 14 and had been building nestboxes for blue tits and sparrows for 4 years. I remember thinking it was the most magical thing I had ever seen on TV. After watching this, I tried sticking a "backless" nestbox to our families garage window with putty but got no takers!

Sometimes it's good to look back to see how far we have come when it comes to us helping bird survival. More people feed and provide boxes now than every before and yet some of our species are still in decline. I remember when I was young we could only buy 'Swoop' bird food and my Mum hung a piece of beef suet on the washing line for the Blue Tits. My Dad made a box or two from old off cuts which were fixed to a pole & the other in our apple tree. We have a long road in front of us to reach our destination. Nice little find Paul & interesting account Benn.

Interesting Benn, I knew was old by the quality of it and the talking in it just sounded like an old film. However didn't think it be that old 16 years before I was born I suddenly feel younger, Hitting 29 this year was depressing me 1 year till 30 etc. Wonder how it made it on youtube after all those years? Just thought I'd post it anyway because I found it an interesting watch!

Earning really good money for the first time, getting married, new house, daughter born and great holidays. Survival made some brilliant award winning wildlife documentaries in those days. They were the first ones to follow the migration of Snow geese using a powered hang glider. They won countless awards over the years. This was pre Attenborough. Great you found it though. Brought back memories.

Paul for that video, I'll watch it later as I'm behind with housework - spent all day yesterday demolishing all the ivy on a fence & I've still got to go and tidy up the fence now before painting it. Nothing outside today as it's bucketing it down, but just before I go - you're all spring chickens compared to me, as I was 30 in 1974. That age & my 40's were the best ones for me, then the 50's. Things started going downhill in my mid sixties, no longer being able to do things as much or as quickly as I used to do.

Noticed the uploader removed the video, Thankfully I have found it again uploaded by a different youtube channel. I have edited the new link into the first post so its watchable again.

There is also a book: Window into a nest written by Flanagan and Morris, 1975. The nestbox is situated to a window from a house in Oxfordshire. The writers were watching the tits behind black curtains. Time flies..now we have webcams for watching..
