hi folks....is anyone taking part in the BTO tawny owl survey? We had our second listen this week and were rewarded with the calls of a male in the distance. Beautiful sound. We are hoping there will be a female calling too soon

I didn’t know about this Sammi, we have owls near us, but I haven’t got a clue which sounds belong to which owls. We do hear them on an evening, and one time turned our security light on to show up the trees and actually saw an owl literally lifting off, the wing span was quite big, an absolutely amazing sight, probably will never see it again Elle xx

Wow Elle that must have been incredible. I'll see if I can find the link for you or its on the BTO website. There is a wonderful owl call identification bit there even if you don't take part in the survey. I hadn't a clue about the different calls. The tawny owl survey just asks you to listen for twenty minutes once a week between sunset and midnight and record if you hear a tawny owl.

Oh Sammi this is fantastic I hadn’t known before listening to the link that we must have at least one pair of Tawney Owls at the back of our house. I honestly thought the female sound of the Owl was in fact another animal of unknown species to me, My family did think perhaps it could have been foxes, as they do make some rather strange noises on an evening! So now I actually know that we have a male and a female this is such good news, I’m thrilled. Elle xx

Elle that is so wonderful to have a pair around. I agree the recordings of the different owl calls is so useful. I'd no idea they all sounded so different. The BTO site is down for maintainence this weekend if you did decide to join in best leave it till a bit later. I also enter the info about my nests on the nest box survey bit. How is about a nest box for owls......that would be amazing

How is about a nest box for owls......that would be amazing Well, we have Strix uralensis (ural owl) box in our garden (Finland, Hauho). The owls have bred there twice, and I reported their live on the BBF1 and also here:
This far no observation how this spring goes. Plenty of rodents around and Sunday evening I heard Glaucidium passerinum (pygmy owl) to our front door. Few weeks ago I found a spot where I heard same time S. aluco (tawny owl), ural owl + Aegolius funereus (tengmalm's owl).

Karwin the videos are incredible ..... I thought the chick would fall out backwards at one point Thanks for posting them again. I missed them first time around. We hear the tawny owl calls around but don't see them as they are probably in the woods close by. It must be lovely to see them close up. Look forward to your posts this year.
