Sammi & Matt
I wouldn't be completely certain that she's 100% incubating, her periods off the nest seem to be a good bit longer than those on it.
I seem to remember that in other years, when seriously incubating, it was very much the other way around, and she was brought in tasty morsels by the male at regular intervals.
We'll wait and see what happens over the next few days.

Beechnut -Is this an average clutch for GT's as your birds don't usually have this small amount unless it's a second brood if I'm correct here, (trying to recall comments on your thread 2018? P.S Wonder where she got all those feathers from?

Thanks Diane and Sue,- Kathy It's certainly not a normal sized clutch as far as I'm concerned, I haven't had anything less than 6 as a first nesting and generally it's 7 plus. I checked back on my recording today - not all because I had it timed on for short periods when she was laying and leaving the nest early morning and only returning to drop a bit of soft stuff in for the cup. Anyway I set it for continuous recording from around 1130 hrs until bedtime at 1900 hrs and during that time she was on the nest for a total 2 hours split up into 6 visits and away for 5 hours from 7 departures, the longest being 2hrs 20mins between 1330 and 1550 hrs. These periods away from the nest are not the usual behaviour of a GT taking incubation seriously, so there may be more eggs to come over the next few days. We can only wait and see......

Brilliant Beechnut, I think they maybe 5 eggs tomorrow, 4 does seem such a small brood even for a GT.

This is fantastic news Beechnut, maybe there will be more to follow or maybe she has been hiding more from the beginning when she first started covering the nest cup Time will tell Elle xx

One thing about GTs Karen - they don't stint on the nest material quality and amount.

Great news Beechnut. Maybe she's felt how cold it's been and thought they might freeze! Snow or hail on the ground here

Beechnut - another one for you. Like yours, our great tits laid a minimum of 5, but last year it was 7.

Some pics from today. Tuppence has spent much longer on the eggs today, but still left the box 9 times over a five and a half hour period. She was away one and a half hours total and on the eggs for four hours. Tommy came in a couple of times at tea time, bringing in maggots of some sort, the second one being about three times the size of the first. I'm still not sure if this is serious incubation, from other years I seem to remember much longer periods between 'comfort breaks'.

Well guys it seems that it's settled - the smallest clutch that I can recall.
Yesterday's 5 eggs not added to this morning, so incubation started yesterday.
A little bit disappointing, but must be thankful for small mercies as things generally seem a bit odd all round this year!

More manageable I guess, gives them all a good chance of fledging

I have posted a thread on Miscellaneous/Technical about an issue that is a bit worrying concerning the website - if anyone is really au fait with computers perhaps they could give me some advice. (Thanks)

It seems that this only occurs using Google Chrome as my browser - if I use Internet Explorer it doesn't.
Should I be worried or just extra careful?

Don't worry about it Beechnut - in some ways this is just Chrome being over zealous. It is indicating that your connection to this site is not encrypted, so there is potential for someone to "spy" on the traffic between you and this forum. Not really an issue for a site like this, but it would be for e.g. a bank. You can get rid of this warning by using "https" instead of "http" at the beginning of the web address for this site.

She is settled on the nest for much of the day. A lot colder here though - perhaps they realise the weather has changed!

I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser - have you tried that Beechnut? Personally, I don't like either of the other two you mention.
P.S. Using the above, it also has https: in the address bar for this site.

I used Firefox for a few years Diane, but went over to Chrome last year when I had a few problems with FF, but I may well give it another go. 😊

Just to be clear, the "problem" that Chrome reports exists in exactly the same way when you access the site via Firefox or Internet Explorer, it's just that the latter two don't think it is an issue worth mentioning. Google has a thing about "HTTPS everywhere" and has recently started showing these warnings to try and push more websites in that direction. But, as mentioned before, you can solve this in Chrome in any case by just connecting to the https version of this forum.
