Thanks Ann and Paul. Have loved seeing this little family grow and feel so privileged that they chose my box. However I have learned so many lessons - firstly to stop stressing about everything- secondly IF I am lucky enough to have a nest again I will have the nest box facing out towards the garden and not along the balcony (think it would have made life so much easier for the birds) - and thirdly act quicker in helping if you feel something is wrong . Looking forward to keeping my eye on the great tit nest now - albeit from a distance, and watching the remaining nests on here. Sue

For the great tit lovers on here. Very short video filmed from my balcony. Nest is live and I can hear chicks but have no idea how long they have to go before fledging. I will keep my eye open but not as easy as when box was on my balcony. Pinching mealworms fro my balcony. Sue

Really lovely videos and pics Sue. Envy you managing to actually be there when the fledging was happening (I was at work when mine took off, plus my camera was dodgy). Don't beat yourself up about the one that didn't make it. I wonder now if the first one of mine to fledge may have done something similar as all the others waited till the next morning and all went in quick succession. It would have been the same risk if any of these BTs had been nesting in any number of other places with or without humans nearby, so it's just nature in the end. Looking forward to next season - let's hope we have another year of plentiful caterpillars!

Thank you Pete, we get so emotionally involved in these little birds and I am such a softie that I was really upset about this chick who was so brave to go first. Sorry videos were so dark but my camera had a job to pick up the box properly because the nest box is in the shade under the balcony above AND it was only just after five o’clock in the morning. My hubby is right ‘I am mad ‘. Yes, looking forward to next season. Sue

Congratulations Sue. As others have said, I would not be kicking yourself over the dead chick. Many of these chicks are predated in the first few days hence why they have such large clutches.

Hi Sue I haven't been able to post much but this morning I have time with no other distractions I was so happy about your surprise great tit nest. I once returned a chick to the nest box successfully when if seemed the best thing to do. I hope the little early fledger survives and that the others fledge successfully. What a worry they are to us these lovely little creatures. I am away from home at the moment staying with relatives and I miss seeing the birds in my garden Good luck and I hope all goes well. jhk

Bumper Bundle time for you then Sue - Blue and Great tits to watch!
Things seem to be moving quickly now with most nestlings fledging. Although there have been really high numbers of young, there seems to have been fewer actual nests on here this year?

Although there have been really high numbers of young, there seems to have been fewer actual nests on here this year? Yes I have been very lucky Beechnut. Blue tits fledged and I was able to see and record it all. The great tits are coming to my balcony for the remaining mealworms that the blue tits didn’t touch, but not so easy to keep an eye on their nest as in the communal garden. I can see the box from my balcony but whether I will get to see the chicks remains to be seen as haven’t a clue when they are due to fledge. Sue

We Well, great tits fledged some time today. They were still there at 12 noon as I was still getting photos of parents in and out of box, however no action later this afternoon so I went down into the garden to investigate. I could hear little chicks around me and in two bushes in particular that the parents were flitting to and from. At one stage I could see one parent obviously feeding a chick but they were so well hidden that I had no chance of getting a photo. The photos above are of one of the parents keeping their beady eye on what I was up to, sitting in the tree above me and obviously keeping their eye on the chicks around. Shame I didn’t get to see any of them but glad they seem to have fledged safely and with both parents still in attendance. All in all a great season for me with several little chicks to boost the bird population. I have been very privileged and would like to say thank you all for taking an interest. Bye all my little ones ( blue and great tits) stay safe and have a wonderful life I shall still be popping on from time to time and keeping my eye on Malcolm’s boxes, and to hear when/ if our Paul is going to be on Springwatch again . Take care all. Sue
