Sounds awful! We are lucky to have very few cats in our immediate neighbourhood. Lot's of dogs though, including ours! There is one tabby cat though that appears from time to time, and once I caught it on the roof of our house trying to get its paws into the crevice where the sparrows nest. I shoed it off pretty smartly!

From what you've said i don't think that would of been cat related Ann, If two of the same bird are dead within feet of eachother sounds like it could of been a nasty fight between the birds and lead to death. A cat can't play with and kill two birds at once and I highly doubt the second bird would of been stupid enough to go near a cat who already as a bird playing with it. Sounds to me like two blue tits fighting which as lead to both their deaths, You see it all time in nest boxes they kill eachother when the fight is nasty enough. Thank god I have never witnessed this but I have seen it plenty of times online.
We have cats, Never had a problem with them killing birds or it doesn't affect nests we get in the garden, One my cats is 15 and she as killed 1 bird her whole life that was a dosy baby starling who landed pretty much in her lap. Its only really wild cats who aren't getting fed regular who will go hunting for birds, My cats only bother looking at a bird if it lands on the floor by it, They won't go searching for them. So if the cats in your area are well fed, Judging by the woman having 6 I am guessing she is a cat lover so they would be, I don't think they will bother hunting unless the bird is a very easy target. What you said on last page though doesn't sound like a cat killing to me in my opinion more likely two males fighting and leading to death.

Sorry to spoil your thread, but I have to post this about the 6 cats next door. They are well fed, three times a day & they just kill for the sake of it. I have had to prune away the front branches of my small, weeping tree so that I can see clearly the trunk, as last year a cat suddenly jumped out & killed a sparrow in front of the tree. Plus, I've seen them playing with frogs & when I've gone out, they've either run off with them or left me with dead bodies - I have more "graves" in our garden than I can count!

Maybe I have very well behaved Cats in that case, But I have 4 youngest being 8 and oldest 15 and between them only two bird deaths in all them years. Both dosy baby birds, They do however kill alot of mice and rats from the waste land at the back of the garden but never birds, Our cats bring anything they kill back and cry by the door with it.
However I still stand by what I say that this doesn't sound like a cat killing, Cats like to play with their pray before killing it letting it go then grabbing it again and teasing it. 1 cat couldn't do that with 2 birds at once its pretty much impossible, However this time of year nasty fights do break out which leads to deaths this sounds more likely.
If you watch this video you'll see how nasty these fights get, This is a man holding two while fighting and they are still going for it he picked them up off the grass. Imagine he didn't stop them atleast one would of been dead for sure.

Yes not great viewing Karen, I was going to post one where it lead to the death of one of the birds but I thought that may be to upsetting. But these things do happen this time of year, My nan had a dead rooster in her box a few years ago. Was roosting from October and a big fight broke out by looks it feathers was everywhere and it left one bird dead in her box. Thank god I haven't ever witnessed this but at this time of year it is known to happen, Sometimes one bird dies sometimes both if it was a big fight.

Imagine he didn't stop them atleast one would of been dead for sure. We had one such fight a few seasons ago when our Great Tit switched boxes and a blue tit started building in their old box. I had to bang repeatedly on the box to stop the fight and the blue tit took a good twenty minutes to recover. It never returned and it prompted me to fit a 28mm metal hole on that box. On the subjects of cats our 17 house street at one time had over 30 cats between 5 houses! I witnessed many a killed bird especially fledglings. Our front garden became a toilet and there was nothing I could do about it. The smell was disgusting. Thankfully the cat loving people moved away and we only have a couple now who live at the bottom of the street. Personally I believe owners should keep their cats indoors. Its the mess they leave and they always do it away from their own homes.

Wet and windy up here in North yorks, a lot cooler than we have had. The birds are feeding well, but no house hunting today. Weather isn't great tomorrow either.

Thanks for your opinions on cats Benn, as our front garden pongs for the same reason, so have to keep watering the cobbles. Other cats in the street spray my bushes too on their way to visit the unspayed female cat next door. The lady just keeps on and on letting this cat have one litter straight after another. I agree with you - cats should eiither be kept indoors OR taken out on a lead like dogs, who always get blamed for mess when their ignorant, lazy owners don't clean up their mess. I've never had a dog in my front garden - only this female cat & her many suitors.
