First Blue Tit hatched this afternoon at 2:30pm. Mum wants to replenish some much needed Calcium but a nuisance feather seems to be annoying her!

Wow they didn't hang about when they got the all clear did they. I wonder what triggers that moment? Is it just hunger do you think as the adults tease them with the outside catering only option? A great tit nest still remains on my bucket list P.s. we are Man City fans. Do I remember you are too?

A great tit nest still remains on my bucket list P.s. we are Man City fans. Do I remember you are too? Aw yes Sammi over the years we have had a number of Great Tits nests and they are different! What triggers them is a mystery to me, They were ready on Friday but only one left! But then the rest stayed over a weekend of cool, wet but not too bad weather. Then today they leave in shiite weather!!!!! I was taken to Maine rd in from 1970 to 1973 as a 10 to 13 year old by my much older Brother in Law so saw all the greats back then so have a soft spot even though i eventually followed my home team Bolton home and away from 1974 until I became an armchair fan in 2007! So glad for the 3-2. Most I cheer for City these days,,,,, weird but after following Bolton all over for all those years by 2007 all my BWFC mates had either died or stopped going! Great that you travel up all that way!

Our Blue Tit Chicks are now 5 days old. The mini mealworms I ordered came yesterday so I placed the caged feeder nearby the box. They lost no time in finding them! I think there are at least 6 young that I can see.

Great news about the mealworms Benn. I hope those chicks thrive. Now I remember you telling me about Bolton. I will keep an eye on their progress I remember Maine Road too.

11 day old BT chicks. I think I counted 6 chicks this afternoon. The mini Mealworms helped them through the cold snap and yesterdays awful all day downpour! A lot warmer today and the parents seem to be finding quite a bit of natural food. Off to Egypt tomorrow for a week of hot 38C Sun by the Red Sea so they might be gone by the time we return. I might be able to log in to the DVR to watch their progress from there.

We left for Egypt with 6 healthy chicks. We returned last Wednesday morning 15th June to find two dead chicks and three live ones. It was quite grisly to watch Mrs Blue Tit pull apart the bodies of the two dead ones in order to facilitate their removal from the box . We had to go away again for a few days to attend a funeral in Newark and returned to an empty nest. The DVR shows they fledged around 09:30 on Friday during the very hot day. I have clipped the three below they all looked quite healthy. Perhaps there were not enough natural food the week we were away and we believe the weather wasn't great. I left it too late to get some more mealworms before we went. Well another season over. See you all next year

Thanks for sharing the fledging Benn. They look a healthy lot and hopefully will do well. I know what you mean about seeing older dead chicks being removed. Not an easy watch. See you in 2023. Maybe next year the sparrows might decide to nest at ours. I looked over our fence and spied the sparrows nesting in the eaves of the school next door. Given the choice I think they would always choose a gap in a roof over a box

The Great Tits used it this year though. Our Sparrows used the Swift boxes last year. This year I blocked the entrances until May but one still built after but abandoned the nest. Like you say they and Starlings seem to always prefer the roof gap! See you in 2023!
