Thanks for the info Paul. I'll have a look. The only trouble would be access to the chimney stack if it was suitable. I think it would require scaffolding Now we have been having problems with a bit of a leak on the roof around the chimney so then scaffolding would be needed...... In the meantime I'll check out the site you suggested......maybe there is another option somewhere on our house.

Lovely pics Paul. I have been wondering about a sparrow box myself. We have a nice little flock of sparrows who hang around our front garden and evidently nest in the roof along our dormer windows. Not sure how many are in there, but you can see them coming and going through gaps in the roof tiles and hear them from the inside. Still not quite sure how I would configure a box up there though!

Thank you Kathy, Matt, Sue, I'll post the video tomorrow icon_biggrin Matt, You should do if they are nesting under your roof, I didn't put this box up for the sparrows to be honest. I just have half my boxes 28mm and half 32mm, I have tried boxes in past for sparrows with 3 holes so they nest close and it was never used. However my single box with just standard 32mm hole gets used every year by then for 2 or 3 broods, I guess they just like there private time near mine

Loving the video Paul Do sparrows prefer nest boxes or natural environments Paul, I’m asking because my garden is always full of sparrows, although it did take a few years to build numbers back up again, now in fact sparrows are one of the biggest visitors, but I have never had any show of interest in the nestboxes, not even a glance, but I’m thinking that’s because there are plenty of trees to pick from. What’s your thoughts? Elle xx

Elle, I really don't know, The sparrows don't really visit my other boxes. I have had 1 visit to my new starling box but that is probably cause its in back garden where I get around 40 sparrows feeding daily. I think they might just like this box, I only have 1 of these boxes and as a little ledge (I'll post picture below think you've seen it anyway) this is the 4th year of having them in this box, I was going to change the box over the winter but I couldn't bring myself to do it incase they hated the new box. Wouldn't want to lose my little sparrows they give me 2 or 3 broods a year and make my season longer We have loads of sparrows around but only 1 nest so I think that shows they might be abit harder to get to nest in boxes, Bare in mind how many boxes I have around the garden! My sparrow box

I've seen a sparrow going into the ivy on our Big Shed a few times over the past days, I can see this happen from our kitchen window, so I'm hopeful that something is going to happen there. We have some more ivy on a fence which is more or less sunny all day in the Summer & yesterday I decided that I must get rid of it completely as I can't stay in the sun long enough to keep it under control. Starting tomorrow whenever it's in shade (until about 11.30 at this time of year) I am going to carefully make a start on it before anything shows an interest in that one.

Diane, Sounds likely you could have a nest going on, Sparrows will nest in climbers like ivy. They just build a dome type nest when they do this. Our female sparrow isn't going out in rain today, She's been in box all morning playing with the nest material and having naps. One thing I never noticed is how so much detail is in the sparrows feathers, Have a look at this picture of her cleaning herself the markings on the back feathers and the wing. You really don't notice this detailing when you just see them in garden you just think there brown and that is it. Chilling out from the rain

Wow Paul....beautiful plumage and like you say they often appear quite dull. Your lighting certainly improves the pics. My led lighting thing arrived today. Any hints as to best place to fit it in Garden Nature apex box. I need a plan of action before the box comes down.

Paul for those lovely photos & yes, when I see sparrows in the garden they do look just brown with markings on. I seem to have more sparrows than any other birds in our garden, always on the feeders & having baths, so maybe a nest will be built in our Big Shed ivy on the front. (Not forgetting the ivy on the even bigger side of it.) At least I would be able to see them from the kitchen, going to and fro with no problem.

Thanks for the info Paul, it is very interesting as you say how only one box gets taken, yet so many other options available also interesting that the female takes naps in there when there isn’t any reason for her to stay in there at this point. Great pics of plumage and to see the different colours from the boring brown we see in the garden is beautiful. For sharing This is why I love nest camaras on the forum, we see close ups of not only their behaviour, but their beautiful colours which we don’t get to see when they flitter in & out of our gardens at great speed! Yes elle, Female sparrow spends alot of time in the box during the day even when not nest building she comes in for naps etc. Male is always with her haha he sits on the ledge at front of the box where entrance hole is normally see his tail flopping down as on the ledge looking out the hole.
Angelo is a member on here Elle, He joined on 27th January it shows on the members list I have. He's just not posted yet. I made sure I sent a private message to every member that had been active posting on the old forum in the past 4 years. I messaged everyone as soon as you found out old forum was shutting and this new forum had been made. I think everyone who was regular posts have actually joined at this point just some have choose not to post yet. and sad face probably showed up cause it was listed under ??? just changed it so its now listed under something different.

Nice video Paul think they are very cute, I've been championing them for a while on here and in my own garden. Would love one to take a shine to my box 2 there would be no competition with the other birds as they get along nicely with the BT's but don't think any bird has looked at it this season yet, except the BT rooster. It might be too low down for Sparrows Anyway, mustn't be greedy though must I, I shall be happy if the Starling nests as well as Flo.
