Indeed Matt, he is a bit of a lothario I think he may have popped back at roosting time as the usual rooster was cross with some intruder at the entrance hole, he told him to go away and indeed he did.

Karen - yet again the greedy males wanting 2 females! Pure greed & just thinking about theirselves & not the poor females!

So folks I have had a rooster for a while now and always thought it was a male, but lately the rooster has been accompanied to the nest box at roosting time, then left when they are tucked up safe, so I am wondering if it could be a female after all who has found a mate , I have a poo cleaner come in most mornings and it looks similar to the rooster, but these birds always have me guessing so I could be totally wrong! The male is very distinct though as he has a lot of black feathers at the back of his neck so cant mistake him. It be nice if it was my female Molly from last year who is cleaning the poo and roosting Only time will tell and wait see what happens come March time, but its all very interesting to watch.

Just seen your tweets Karen, It sounds like you could have a female rooster! Even if you don't the fact she is coming to clean the box most mornings shows a strong interest in it, I'd say its looking extremely good for your tree box.

Karen - that it is Molly, as that would be smashing for you knowing she's back.

This is scruff the male who is checking the box daily and has found himself a mate who has the odd cleaning session in the box, he is easy to id due to the extra black feathers on his collar at the back of his head.

I have seen these boxes before Karen, I think its a good idea my only negative would be if birds like Sparrows / flycatchers can use the box it wouldn't give much safety for a blue tit. Sparrows are horrible when overtaking a nest box, I have seen my chicks get beating in the sparrow box and last year even killed and removed. So if you have sparrows in the garden it would be risky I think.

Hi Karen just catching up today. What kind of box is the one Scruff and his lady are using? Is it quite a deep one or is it just the camera position? Scruff certainly knows how to make an entrance 🙂
