Wouldn’t worry too much Pete, don’t forget they can halt things for all kinds of reasons even upcoming weather etc, I think it’s better to go by the birds when it comes to weather, they are better than the people on tv (who never get it right)!! like yesterday it was glorious weather & yet last night it was something like -2 fingers crossed it continues Pete Elle xx

I want everyone to have a nest on here Pete but I know it's frustrating to say the least for you but don't give up yet because I do think the time is not right for some of our birds. Maybe it's the first timers that start too early? if only we could understand where they are coming from!

How frustrating Pete, especially after they had already made a pretty decent start! Good luck with the GTs - that sounds promising at least.

That is a shame Pete, Will this be the second year on the run the blue tits have started and abandoned? Best of luck with the Great Tits though, Really hope you get a nest! Still got my fingers crossed for You, Matt, Karen and Amanda. Still nothing with your boxes Matt?

No visits, nothing Paul. Bit gutting but I am slowly getting over it. Thinking of getting a sparrow box going for next year as we have loads of those around. Starlings too, but I have no idea where they nest locally.

Yeah second year on the trot for the BT's Paul, i think the GT,s are nesting elsewhere as i,ve quite a few visits now but no nest material.

I wonder what puts them off Pete? Maybe the local GTs get a bit territorial?

I think you could be right about the GT's hassling them Matt they certainly were last year.

Right, this has been going on for the past three days now lots of pecking at the hole and wriggles but no nest material it lasts for about 5-10 minutes roughly with long breaks between this about 1-2 hours then abruptly stops between 3-4pm. I would imagine she would have eggs by now and that they are doing this while away from the nest she's actually chosen as no nest material has been brought in. Anyone else got any ideas about this?

I can't comment on GT's I haven't had them ever nesting in a camera box to know enough about them, However it does look very promising doesn't it? I think to still be getting visits / nest wriggles this "late" in the season can only be a good thing. Maybe her first nest as been disturbed?

Post by petesbox on Apr 5, 2019 20:51:02 GMT
Yes thats a possibility Paul about the nest being disturbed, but this is what i think. I think they are just going through the motions while away from the other nest, from my experience of GT's i would expect material coming in and for her to roost in the box and not to end visits at about 3-4pm. Anyway i just thought i would share this behavior with everyone, i find it quite intriguing.... if thats the right word for it.

This is fascinating isn't it Pete. I wonder if they do 'pretend' to take over a nest site just to prevent competition in the area?

Yeah that could be a possibility as well Sammi.

Sorry to hear about the BT’s Pete, I often have a 2nd half built nest (this year being an exception) I think these could be distraction nests! The Gts seem to be doing all the right moves for a potential nest, but I don’t know if you or anyone else thinks the Gt seems to not be able to spread her wings to the full when trying to do a ‘wiggle’!! My fingers are still crossed Pete Elle xx

Yep that could be possible as well Elle. I put the block of wood in there to make the floor space smaller as its a starling box from Garden nature, the floor space is the same as last years box i had there give or take a couple of millimeters, and had a succesfull brood of ten GT's, although i have been having thoughts of removing the block of wood. Thanks for your crossed fingers Elle.

Be interesting to see if they do start bringing in nesting material Pete. Looks promising. Don’t give up hope cause although great tits are usually a bit earlier than the blueys las year a friend of mine had great tit chicks after blue tits had all but finished. May have been through a failed nest or maybe they start a new nest for when the first ones have fledged? Don’t know much about great tits. Good luck. Sue
