Hi Ellie Wonderful news of the safe arrival of your granddaughter, pretty name. Congratulations to you and the parents. Welcome to the grandparent club, such a special one to be in. I'm sure you are on FaceTime often so you can peep in, roll on when you can visit them and have that first cuddle.

Congratulations Elle on becoming a nan. I had no time to put up boxes for a few years as I became a grandad 3 years ago and we were looking after him. He wants me to name my bird Chloe. I have never named birds so it looks like I have to now. Now for a name for the male.

Hi folks, just caught up with everyone’s posts, forgive me if Iv left anyone out, there were an awful lot to catch up on! Thankyou all for all the congrats for my first grandchild, she’s an absolute treasure, for all you grandparents out there you will know what I mean when I say, I honestly never ever thought you could love someone you’ve never actually met in person before, but seems I was wrong, you can, and I have As for her name, does anyone remember Delilah from the forum? Well whilst setting this all up for me, my girls had to sit with me for a long time when I first started doing this sort of stuff (y’all know I’m rubbish at tech stuff) and I once was talking (posting) to Delilah, and my daughter no1 said, ‘what a beautiful pretty name, when I have children I shall call my child Delilah if I have a girl ‘ and so she did. Right, I think the birds are using natural habitat this year, they use the feeders but always go to trees, which is a good thing really. Paul.. there is a lot more pairs this year and there definitely isn’t anymore bird boxes put up in the close vicinity, so don’t know the answer this year! Will hopefully have some success next year just a bummer that I’m off work and could really enjoy the time watching Stay safe everyone Elle xx

Hi Ellie My birds have also gone for the natural habitat, new generation have different ideas, which hasn’thelped you Sue,Matt and myself this year, I’m enjoying watching both parents of blue tits and great tits come to the feeders and hopefully will see the new fledglings as well. I have Mrs blackbird busy taking the mesh from my hanging basket for her nest. A pr of regular robins have had one young and I’ve watched it being fed, I think the nest had been attacked hence one baby

Ah Elle...I'm so disappointed for you and everyone else who has not yet achieved a nest this year. It is a real bummer that you are at home, and have all the time to actually enjoy it. I hear ye!!! So frustrating and I most definitely know how that feels.... . I'm really hoping that a 2nd brood occurs for you all or some other unusual event that brings them to your birdbox over the weekend and that you look in and get that lovely surprise...fingers crossed.

Hi all Look at this beauty my daughter sent me this picture to ask what it was because her & her partner couldn’t get out the gate, this was taking beginning of April before she had the baby, they were washing their car, then this appeared, she was frightened because it literally would not move out the way,and she didn’t want to shoo it out the way so they waited 15minutes for it to fly off before they could finish the car!! Iv defo given up GBH, iv stopped turning tv on now so will just hope for next year now. Paul - Iv checked all the neighbours out Paul, luckily they’r all in the clear, cos yer know what would happen if I found out the had boxes up!!! Fence fires go on all the time, don’t they?! Elle xx Ps I think it’s a sparrow hawk All stay stay safe

Oh wow Elle. The grim reaper of small birds. We had one last season and our garden was on his/her hunting route! I am 100% sure they predated our female Blue tit after a week sitting on 8 eggs. Beautiful hunters, but potentially devastating when they discover your feeders.

I think over the years one of these has taken a few of my male bluetits.
Amazing to watch, one swooped over my fence and took a goldfinch off the feeder without even creating a disturbance. So swift and agile.

Hi All It is a beautiful bird as we all agree, but as you say Paul it’s not something I like to see in my neighbourhood, I had suspicions there were some kind of hawk in her neighbourhood because she had gone into her garden one day & was horrified to see a pigeon (I think) or lack of it, in the middle of her lawn, it looked like it had been picked meticulously. From what her neighbours have said it’s been around for years (I don’t know how long they live) & apparently the bluetits & greatits used to be in abundance, then all of a sudden their numbers suddenly declined and eventually disappeared, & this is when this lovely bird was first discovered that being said, Sparrows and blackbirds are still thriving . Amanda, thankyou for the info, this is something for next year I think when I will possibly have a bit more time to suss out. Benn, I never thought of this bird as the grim reaper but you are exactly right, we also have one hang around our neighbourhood, you can usually tell cos the birds goes ever so quiet, eerily quiet and usually disappears. The good thing is my daughter doesn’t have the same bird hobby as me (think both my girls had enough of me being neurotic when they lived at home) so at least she won’t have the upset of watching any birds get predated by this wonderful species, seeing the remains of the pigeon on her lawn upset her enough when she realised what had happened!!! Taz you are exactly right they really are stealth like Stay safe everyone Elle xx
