Well.. things have been very slow indeed around here, with no visits at all to any of the five boxes for the last three weeks. This morning, though, I did get one finally - and the first ever visit to the new sideview box that I put up about 6 weeks ago. Amazing really that a bird hadn't even poked their nose in during that time, but that is what my local birds are like! Still plenty of blue tits on the feeders, and even a woodpecker on the fat ball feeder this morning as well as a blackcap in the crab apple tree over the last few days.
Here's the first visit to the new sideview box. Apologies for my messy paint job - that paint was all supposed to be on the outside, not sure what happened there. It is non-toxic, at least (I hope).

Won't get my hopes up this year, but I will still keep my fingers crossed! Bit of a weird one so far, with many fewer visits than the same time last year despite more birds in the garden overall. Probably weather to blame - let's see what happens this week, with some dry days and a bit less wind..

That is really good news Matt. So uplifting to have a visit, let’s hope it liked what it saw (I am sure a spot of paint or two will be forgiven ). Fingers crossed that it turns into many more visits as hopefully the weather changes a bit, and leads to a nest that you so so deserve. Gorgeous colours on the video. Sue

Nice one Matt lets hope it carries on. How come your videos are playing side ways Matt?

What do you mean by sideways Pete? I oriented the camera so the width went across the box, since the box is wider in that dimension and I think it fits better to the camera view that way. Or do you mean not from above? If so, that's because this is a "sideview" box like a few of us on here have got now - the camera is pointing down at 45 degrees into the (potential!) nest area - see pic below.

When i play the video the hole is at the bottom right, so the front of the box is showing to be the floor.

I didn't even notice that think it might be the camera angle making it look like the bird is coming in from the bottom of the screen rather than the top. If you watch my side box video here matt and look where the hole is on mine to yours you'll see what Pete means.

Yeah, the hole is bottom right but as far as I can tell there is no "right way" round in a box, so it doesn't really matter. I could have it top left. I tried my camera in the way you have it Paul, but I was getting a lot of the front/back walls and less of the sloped left/right walls. I figure if I do get a nest, it will come up the slope a bit so I will get better coverage having the wide aspect of the video in the way I have got it. I don't think any of it really matters though Edit: Yeah, I suppose I can see what you mean - the bird doesn't stand upright when it is this way around. Had to decide whether to get as much of the box in as possible, or choose a more natural angle I suppose..

Can you re-orientate the picture via the software Matt?

|
Post by matt on Mar 3, 2020 16:09:34 GMT
I could but the camera has a 4:3 aspect ratio, so I specifically set it this way around to get as much of the box floor/sloping floor space into the image as possible. If I did it the other way around then much of the image would be the two vertical side walls, and the hole probably wouldn't be visible. I'm afraid you'll just have to bend your head over Pete!!

I was just showing you what Pete meant because you seemed confused, I didn't even notice it myself until seeing the comment, I was busy looking at the bird and its behaviour in your box if am completely honest. Aslong as you actually get a nest in one your boxes this year doesn't matter what way an hole is facing on the video playback.

Well I wish I had a side view box cause I think that is great angle and very different to see all the comings and going. Come on Pete bend that head a bit more . Sue

I've not got a sideways box so not really following the discussion but I do love the colour and clarity Matt. May I also compliment you on how tidy your wires are. They just neatly disappear. My wiring is what I call abstract bordering on the wild🙂

It is all very neat isn’t it Sammi! Mine are a bit the same as yours.....I have wires everywhere! Regarding the camera angles, yes it’s very much personal preference, but it does look like it needs a 90 degree turn clockwise......stunningly clear video quality though and the blue tit looks quite at home in there
