Easter 2013 a twitcher from Australia visited our corners in the forests of Finland. I planned that we will see Strix uralensis (ural owl) from someone's nestbox two kilometres away. One week before I checked the owl was there, but when we returned, the box was empty - maybe a marten had robbed it. I decided that I will hang an owl nestbox in my garden so that I could follow owls from my livingroom coach. It was a tongue-in-cheek decision, but to our surprise, since 2016 we have had Ural owl breeding in our garden ( birdboxdiaries.boards.net/post/1471/thread). This year Elizabeth (as the mother is named) has two nestlings, and the older one started to lurk on the hole two days ago. The young ones do that usually two or three days before leaving. Here is a video from today: streamable.com/fscglSoon after that this nestling watched as sparrowhawk took a young chaffinch from our garden, and just after I started typing this post, it jumped out.
