I had a go at making my own fat cakes now the weather has turned chilly and they have gone down very well, this lovely male Chaffinch has enjoyed some today!

Do you have a recipe you could share Karen? I have some shop bought ones in a feeder that don't really get a lot of interest. Occasionally a starling, or even a bluetit, will have a peck at them but they must not love them because they very rarely bother (much more interest in the seed feeders).

Hi Matt, I basically got a block of lard and melted it down, then mixed together meal worms, peanuts, bird seed sunflower hearts and put the mix into paper cups and topped the cup up with melted lard until it just covered the seed mix, I put a string inside it to hang them up also. Great fun to do especially with kids.

That's a lovely photo Karen, I always enjoy looking at yours as I do with everybody else's. (Perhaps a bit more as you are in Yorksher too!)

Karen, I made some out of melted beef suet, peanuts, and dried mealworms. They did get eaten but our birds prefer the cheap and cheerful fat balls from B & M bargains!!
